Widow/Widowers is a local group that provides support to individuals who have lost a spouse. Held at Deer Run Apartments in Deer Isle, you can find Widow/Widowers meeting in the Dining Hall at 12:30pm, following Meals For Me. New activities are always taking place, such as trips to local restaurants, gardens, boat trips, making jewelry, Bingo, and many more!

Widow/Widowers meet the first and third Friday of every month. New members are always welcome! The group is facilitated by Sherri Allen Haskell.

Island Workshop Day

Island Workshop Day is a partnership between HIP and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. This is a one day event which brings together a wide variety of artists with a group of eager participants. This event is open to residents of Deer Isle, Stonington, and Blue Hill/Peninsula. By fostering community and interaction, we hope new relations and connections occur among people on both sides of the bridge. The purpose is to open Haystack to individuals who have never been to Haystack or don’t get the chance to participate in workshops offered during other times of the year. Workshops are designed for beginners. For 2010, Island Workshop Day will be held on Saturday, May 8th.

Island Walkers is a collaboration between HIP and Island Heritage Trust. If you wish to join Island Walkers, call the HIP office at 367-6332. Once you walk and log in 100 miles, you receive a free Island Walkers t-shirt.

Support Group for Caregivers, Families and Friends of Cancer Patients

HIP’s Support Group for Caregivers is held the second and fourth Monday of each month from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Parsonage of the First Congregational Church of Deer Isle. The group is facilitated by a former caregiver, Alice Hildebrand.  Drop ins are welcome!

An excerpt from Dan Hadley’s speech on the Support Groups at HIP’s Summer Reception 2008:

“The first rule of caregiving is: take care of yourself. So how was I to deal with the stress of being a caregiver? Fortunately I had the opportunity to join the caregivers group led by Rev. Alice Hildebrand. Alice has a gift for making you feel comfortable in sharing your concerns and doubts. Alice helped me view my feelings and actions as a normal response to the stresses of being a caregiver. Another benefit of the support group is that by helping others in the group cope with their situation you learn to look beyond yourself and share what you have learned. I can tell you with confidence that the caregiver group enabled me to continue on with hope and helped strengthen me to get to the point where I am today.”
